Nursery Rhyme:
When... a Little Tiny Boy

A classic nursery rhyme wording to When... a Little Tiny Boy:

When that I was but a little tiny boy,
With a hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
And the rain it raineth every day.
With a hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy.

Thoughts on the When... a Little Tiny Boy Nursery Rhyme

Nursery rhymes are something very special to a child. And as we grow older, we look back on them fondly. There are nursery rhymes you may wish to pass on to your children, and it’s nice to know the origin of such nursery rhymes. “When... a Little Tiny Boy” is one such nursery rhyme.

Did you know that this nursery rhyme is actually a part of a Shakespearean play? It is the song that the character Feste sings in Shakespeare’s comedy, “Twelfth Night.” Feste is a fool in the house of the Countess Olivia, one of the main characters in the play. A fool is also known as a jester, and is the modern equivalent of a clown or entertainer. This part of the song is the first verse of a five verse song. He sings it at the end of the final act of the play. The entire song was meant to be a reminder that no matter what happens in life, there will always be problems to deal with (the wind and the rain). Feste was saying that even when he was a child playing with toys, “the rain it raineth every day.” In the later verses, he describes different times in his life where the rain was still raining, such as when he got married. The song was meant to bring “Twelfth Night” to a close, since the characters were mostly merrymaking wealthy people who had forgotten that life would always have troubles.
