Nursery Rhyme: Three Young Rats |
A classic nursery rhyme wording to
Three Young Rats:
Three young rats with black felt hats,
Three young ducks with white straw flats,
Three young dogs with curling tails,
Three young cats with demi-veils,
Went out to walk with two young pigs
In satin vests and sorrel wigs,
But suddenly it chanced to rain
And so they all went home again.
Three Young RatsThoughts
on the Three Young Rats Nursery RhymeWhen you hear the words nursery rhyme you can not help but to think of Mother Goose, talking animals, silly characters, and clever rhymes. Nursery rhymes conjure up fanciful images that filled out childhood. However, nursery rhymes were not always the fun and fantasy-filled stories and songs that we know them as. At one time, nursery rhymes were seen more as teaching tools then a chance for kids to have fun.
Three Young Rats is one such rhyme filled with whimsy and fun. This nursery rhyme is a Mother Goose nursery rhyme, and one that many British children grew up with. It is one of those whimsical nursery rhymes that has a clever rhyming scheme and give animals human characteristics, like rats who wear hats, ducks who live in flats, and cats who wear demi veils and are friends with pigs. Though little is known about this nursery rhyme, it reflects a 19th century trend in nursery rhymes to have a fantasy theme and are meant to entertain. Before these nursery rhymes came along, childrens stories and nursery rhymes served mainly served a moral purpose, not an entertaining one.
Nursery rhymes have always served a very special purpose in childhood. It is a good idea to pass on the tradition of nursery rhymes to your children. After all, they also deserve to share in the whimsical world of nursery rhymes that we all grew up with.
