Three Little Kittens is one of those whimsical English nursery rhymes that give animals human characteristics. It is also believed that this rhyme is the origin of the saying I smell a rat. Although most English nursery rhymes of the 19th century had some sort of moral theme, Three Little Kittens is more whimsical with a child-like rhyming scheme instead. It was first published in 1833 in a book collection called Little Songs for Little Boys and Girls by American poet Eliza Lee Cabot Follen. It was first published in England, then later in the United States in 1843. It is believed that Follen took an earlier, more crude version of the nursery rhyme and refined it into the rhyme that we know it as today. After its debut, Three Little Kittens became a huge hit with the public and was later made a part of Mother Goose nursery rhymes. The rhyme is considered the shifting point where nursery rhymes went from having a morally edifying theme to having a more whimsical and entertaining purpose.
