When people think of the term Queen of Hearts, they might first think of the beautiful and high scoring playing cards (the image on this card being modeled in the likeness of Elizabeth of York, queen consort of Elizabeth VII), or differing songs of that title from artists that range from country crooner Juice Newton to pop sensation Jason Derulo. A character of this names appears in the classic Lewis Carroll story Alice in Wonderland, and the immortal Princess Diana bears the nickname the Queen of Hearts for her many charitable efforts. As it turns out, the Queen of Hearts is also the name of a popular nursery rhyme that first surfaced in 1782. An anonymously written poem originally introduced in The European Magazine, this verse features characters frequently depicted on playing cards; caught up in a light-hearted melodrama of robbery and royal intrigue. “The Queen of Hearts she made some tarts all on a summer’s day,” it begins. “The King of Hearts called for the tarts and beat the Knave full sore.” The story has a happy ending, as the Knave of Hearts returns the stolen goods, vowing to mend his ways. The other good news is that this charming verse has captured the hearts of children throughout the generations, which is why it would make a perfect baby shower game. At the shower, in fact, the radiant mother to be could be considered the Queen of Hearts; and as a party game, guests could be challenged to rain her with heart-themed gifts.
