“Taffy was a Welshman,” is a traditional English nursery rhyme that was first published in 1780 in the book, “Nancy Cock’s Pretty Song Book.” The poem itself has its beginnings in Celtic Mythology and has been handed down generation after generation.

The nursery rhyme itself goes, “Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief; Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of beef.” This stanza of the poem gives an insight to the type of person that Taffy was and the type of things that he did.

As one reads on in the poem it appears stanza after stanza that Taffy was not a considerate person and continued on in his ways. However, the last stanza, “I went to Taffy’s house, Taffy was in bed; I took up a poker and threw it at his head.” This stanza of the poem describes the fate of Taffy and his payback for the evil that he bestowed on others.
