A classic nursery rhyme wording to
Sleep, Baby, Sleep:
Sleep, baby, sleep,
Thy papa guards the sheep;
Thy mama shakes the dreamland tree
And from it fall sweet dreams for thee,
Sleep, baby, sleep,
Sleep, baby, sleep,
Our cottage vale is deep;
The little lamb is on the green,
With woolly fleece so soft and clean,
Sleep, baby, sleep,
Sleep, baby, sleep,
Down where the woodbines creep;
Be always like the lamb so mild,
A kind and sweet and gentle child,
Sleep, baby, sleep,
Sleep, Baby, SleepThoughts
on the Sleep, Baby, Sleep Nursery RhymeSleep, baby, sleep, is a phrase that has proven very popular on today’s pop culture landscape; and in a variety of forms. It is the name of a famous collection of lullabies performed and recorded by pop singer Nicolette Larson. It is the title of a spiritually themed lullaby as well as the name of a book that aims to help parents enable their children to sleep independently, as well as the moniker of a 1995 TV movie.
Yet few people realize that these words originated in a beautiful and classically inspired lullaby entitled Sleep, Baby, Sleep; composed by Richard Wagner as a part of a larger work called Siegfried Idyll. Siegfried, appropriately enough, was Wagner’s son, born in 1869. The tune’s timeless lyrics include “Sleep, baby, sleep! Thy father tends the sheep, Thy mother shakes the branches small, Whence happy dreams in showers fall. Sleep, baby, sleep!”
Sleep, Baby, Sleep also makes for an ideal baby shower game. In this game, the host could challenge groups of guests to come up with their own unique lullabies. These songs could take the form of elaborate and classically influenced verses that bring a tear to the eye, or perhaps a short rap tune that involves the repeated shouting of the phrase, “Hey, Kid! Go to sleep! Word to your mother—most literally!” Indeed, while prizes could be awarded for the Most Creative, Most Original, Most Touching, and Funniest lullabies, with the top prize going to the song most likely to get the kid to sleep, the ultimate winner will be the ‘mom of honor’ at the baby shower; who will receive all of the composed lullabies as a shower gift.
