on the Skip, skip, skip to my Lou Nursery RhymeWhy on earth would anyone want to skip to meet someone named Lou? Nobody knows for sure; what is certain, however, is that the immortal nursery rhyme known as “Skip, Skip, Skip to My Lou,” is among the most popular and long lasting nursery rhymes in history.
Today this seemingly nonsensical rhyme has claimed an important place in American pop culture. A website with this name is a popular arts and crafts resource for women. And artists that range from children’s musical group The Wiggles to comedian Pauley Shore have sung this rhyming song as a part of their performances. And a video of group of preschoolers dancing to the same song has garnered nearly 300,000 views and 110 ‘likes’ on YouTube.
This pop culture phenomenon started out as a musical game that swept country dances during the pioneer era. The dance centers around the practice of ‘partner stealing.’ A number of partners dance hand in hand in a circle, around a single dancer who croons the line, “Lost my partner what’ll I do?” as potential partners dance around him. Finally he sings, “I’ll get another one prettier than you.”
Although the phrase “I’ll get another one prettier than you” will never pass at a modern, sweet-natured festivity such as a baby shower, a Skip to the Lou style line dance would make an enjoyable activity at this party. Perhaps the person at the center of the circle could say something to the effect, “I’ll get the sweetest, dearest person here,” then move forward to snare a dance with their own significant other.
