Nursery Rhyme: Six Little mice |
A classic nursery rhyme wording to
Six Little mice:
Six little mice sat down to spin;
Pussy passed by and she peeped in;
"What are you doing, my little men?"
"Weaving coats for gentlemen."
"Shall I come in and cut off your threads?"
"No, no, Mistress Pussy, you'd bite off our heads."
"Oh, no, I'll not; I'll help you to spin."
"That may be so, but you don't come in!"
Six Little miceThoughts
on the Six Little mice Nursery RhymeWhile most nursery rhymes have morphed substantially over the years, the clever verse known as Six little mice sat down to spin has perhaps seen the most transformations of all. Yet all versions of this tale are equally adorable.
In 1850, the book Harry’s Ladder of Learning started with the line “Four little mice sat down to spin”; and in this version, it is a female cat that disrupts the sewing circle (“Pussy pass’d by and she peep’d in”). In the 1912 book The Little Mother Goose, an indeterminate number of mice are disrupted by a mischief making feline of indeterminate gender (“Some little mice sat in a barn to spin, Pussy came by, and she popped her head in; “Shall I come in and cut your threads off?” “Oh, no, kind sir, you will snap our heads off.”)
The current version of this rhyme was introduced in 1920, when “Six little mice sat down to spin” was published in “The Big Book of Nursery Rhymes,” edited by Walter Jerrold.
Any version of this charming nursery rhyme would make a wonderful baby shower game. The host could, for example, challenge guests to form in teams of six to create a sewing related craft project; then perhaps she could don a whimsical cat’s mask to royally freak out the guests; thus adding to the fun. Prizes given for the best, most creative, most beautiful and most original craft projects could include stuffed and ceramic cats; or perhaps an adorable Mickey Mouse doll.
