The words “See, see! What shall I see?” may not mean much to many of today’s children; but once a parent or teacher recites the entire rhyme that includes this immortal introductory line, then kids are sure to get a kick out of this story of a horse that seems to have some sort of anatomical challenge…. The entire nursery rhyme reads “See, see! What shall I see? A horse’s head where his tail should be.” For more than a century this whimsical, if somewhat bizarre nursery rhyme has intrigued, amused and entertained millions of children around the world. This same rhyme is sometimes performed as a song, and has inspired some whimsical cartoons and even puzzles; creative projects in which those who are putting together the puzzles are encouraged to most literally put the head piece where the tail should be, and vice versa! This nursery rhyme is a bit younger than many, as it was first published in the 1916 book The Real Mother Goose. In 1920, the rhyme also appeared in the Big Book of Nursery Rhymes, edited by Walter Jerrold. This whimsical rhyme also could inspire a fun baby shower game; one in which guests are challenged to draw or paint their own rendering of that unfortunate horse whose head is where his tail should be.
