Ring a-round the roses (also known as ring around the rosie) is one of the few nursery rhymes that was recited before it was written. For although the rhyme was first printed in the 1881 book Old Nursery Rhymes by Kate Greenaway, it was first heard in school yards around the world as early as the late 1700s. Indeed, Ring A-round the Roses is one of those rare nursery rhymes that exists in multiple forms; as a playground chant, a poem, a nursery rhyme, and even as a song. At least a dozen versions exist of the nursery rhyme itself, the most popular modern version of which reads, “Ring around a rosie, a pocket full of posies, ashes ashes, we all fall down.” In recent years, some have alleged that this seemingly innocent verse in some way referenced the Black Plague. While this has been proven to be a falsehood, it is true that this nursery rhyme also exists in the form of a playground game; one in which people join hands, walk in a circle and recite the verse. Then, upon singing the lyric “Ashes, ashes, we all fall down,” they follow the directive stated in the song and fall to the ground. While some adults in attendance at a baby shower—especially the mother to be—won’t savor the idea of falling to the ground during the game, a variation of “Ring a-round the roses” could be played as a baby shower game. In this version, players could stand around the mother to be with hands joined and recite the nursery rhyme; then, instead of falling, each player could stop at the Ashes, Ashes point to state a compliment directed at the mother to be. This could range from “You look radiant” to “You’ll be a great mother.”
