Ride a cock horseThoughts
on the Ride a cock horse Nursery RhymeAlthough no one is certain of the name of the author who penned the immortal nursery rhyme Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross, most people believe that the subject of this verse was none other than the legendary Queen Elizabeth I.
According to most sources, the nursery rhyme originated as a poem to commemorate the queen’s trip to view the huge stone cross that had been erected in the British province of Banbury. The queen is credited as the “fine lady upon a white horse with rings on her fingers and bells on her toes” mentioned in the verse. The rhyme’s final line, “She shall have music wherever she goes,” describes the manner in which travelling minstrels accompanied and serenaded the queen en route to the site of the cross.
Predictably, Ride a Horse to Banbury Cross has found great popularity in the nurseries and nursery school classrooms of England. Yet the rhyme also has caught on here in the states, and thus would make a great baby shower game. In this game, each guest could be given a hobby horse stick and some costume jewelry, and could be asked to recreate the queen’s famous ride.
As other guests stand around and play the queen a musical tribute on kazoos and party whistles, adorned guests could rise their ‘horses’ across the party area and show them their very best ‘queen’s wave.’ Winners could be judged based on their creativity, humor and originality, and could receive prizes that include queen dolls, miniature crosses and horse figurines.
