Nursery Rhyme: Over the River |
A classic nursery rhyme wording to
Over the River:
Over the river and through the woods
To Grandmother's house we go.
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh
Through the white and drifted snow, O!
Over the river and through the woods
Oh, how the wind does blow.
It stings the nose
And bites the toes
As over the ground we go.
Over the river and through the woods
Trot fast my dapple gray.
Spring over the ground
Like a hunting hound
On this Thanksgiving Day, Hey!
Over the river and through the woods
Now Grandmother's face I spy.
Hurrah for the fun,
Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie.
Over the RiverThoughts
on the Over the River Nursery RhymeOver the River and Through the Woods is known most popularly as a Christmas carol; one that is performed every year by school children in holiday programs across the country.
What these kids might now however, is that this classic work was presented originally as a Thanksgiving poem, as opposed to a Christmas song. A poem penned by Lydia Marie Child in 1844, it is properly known as “A Boy’s Thanksgiving Day” and first appeared in Child’s book “Flowers for Children, Volume Two.”
While the poem’s timeless opening lines, “Over the river, and through the wood,” remain the same, it has over the years evolved into a markedly different tale. In the original version, the children depicted in this tale were visiting their grandfather’s house for Thanksgiving; in its later incarnation as a Christmas song (recorded by artists such as Danny Kaye and the Andrews Sisters), the kids are headed to Grandma’s house for Christmas.
Interestingly enough, the song is featured in the classic cartoon “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”; and while the kids do indeed sing the song en route to the home of Charlie Brown’s grandmother, Charlie is quick to remind them that his grandmother lives in a condo!
Over the River and Through the Woods also makes for a great—and very sentimental--baby shower game. In this game, each guest could be challenged to remember and recite their fondest family holiday memory. The host then could judge the stories based on Most Creative, Most Original, Most Touching, Most Humorous, etc. Prizes could include chocolate Santas or turkeys, or (as per the baby shower theme) candied rattles.

We have over 100 nursery rhymes to create a perfect baby shower. From the classics we all remember to the simple ones we forgot.
