Thoughts on the One Two Buckle My Shoe Nursery Rhyme

One of the classic counting rhymes, 1,2 One, Two, Buckle My Shoe is a nursery rhyme that is known and loved among children everywhere. Yet today’s tots may not realize that one of their favorite rhymes is more than two centuries old. First appearing in the 1805 story collection Songs for the Nursery, this work uses common and clever rhymes to teach the basics of counting. It includes phrases such as “One, two, buckle my shoe, three, four, knock at the door, five, six, pick up sticks…nine, ten, a big fat hen,” etc. Due to its simplicity, not to mention the important life skill it imparts through its lines, this rhyme is taught in virtually every preschool and kindergarten program throughout the country. One, Two, Buckle My Shoe also claims a place in modern pop culture, as it has been recorded in musical form as a folk song and is even the title of a popular mystery novel, written by the legendary Agatha Christie. It also makes a great party game at a baby shower, as every guest is sure to be familiar with the rhyme and its lines. To play the One, Two, Buckle My Shoe baby shower game, ask guests to act out their favorite line from the classic rhyme. A guest could, for example, just bend over and buckle their shoes; or they could run to the nearest door and knock vigorously. The host could judge their efforts based on their humor, creativity, originality, etc., awarding prizes accordingly.
