There are many different nursery rhymes each of them having a different approach in how they work, what they were originally meant to stand for or to teach children that listened to them. In the case of “One for Sorrow” a little research tells the story, this nursery rhyme came from Britain during the early sixteenth century. The first known written copy was around 1780 which was an early version of the rhyme as it is known today. It is believed that the rhyme is connected with superstitions about creatures called magpies, which were birds that were considered birds of ill omen.

An extended version of the rhyme came out in 1846, which gives us lines like; “Six for gold, Seven for a secret” in the more modern version seen today. Lines two and four on occasion will have additional wording or be changed out for example line four; “Four for death;” could read “Four for birth”.

The nursery rhyme has been known to have the magpie reference replaced depending on the location of where it is being told. For instance in the Americas since magpies are less common, the blackbird is used in place due to the coloring scheme, but the bird is from a different family of birds. Other animals have been used as well, such as the crow, bluebird, etc. each being more common in certain areas then other places.
