OBG/YN Training
Obstetrician/Gynecologists (OB/GYN) are high school graduates who earn their bachelor’s degree and advance to and graduate from medical school. If the doctorial path is not for you consider a career as a nurse practitioner with a focus in obstetrics and gynecology. Perhaps only the labor and delivery is what excites a person, then a field as a midwife would be advantageous.
Several universities across the country offer bachelor’s degrees in Pre-Med. Look for an accredited institution with a focus in obstetrics and gynecology to obtain a heads up for medical school. Upon graduation from medical student the doctor must perform a residency in a hospital. This provides a hands on application of all material studied over the years of coursework.
The John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai’I at Manoa offers coursework in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health. At this institution instruction in obstetrics and gynecology is divided into four general areas: basic clerkship, student electives, residency training, and continuing medical education. The primary objectives of the basic clerkship during the third year is to give students an overall perspective of the entire field, an in-depth knowledge of women’s health care, and an ability to perform those technical skills necessary for the care of women. The elective experiences are developed to allow interested students the opportunity to acquire detailed knowledge and experience in women’s health care or within specific areas of care.
Yale University School of Medicine in Connecticut also offers a degree in medicine focusing on Obstetrics and Gynecology. Their mission is to integrate outstanding reproductive science research with cutting edge, high quality, and compassionate clinical care to advance women's reproductive health. Also the school seeks to train the next generation of academic Obstetrician/Gynecologist physician scientists and leaders.
Coursework at both institutions, and the majority around the country revolves around anatomy, chemistry, biology and reproductive health.
Job Titles and Descriptions
Midwife: Provides antenatal and postnatal care to women; intra-partum care and delivers babies; participates in developmental activities; and works autonomously within guidelines and sphere of professional practice.
Obstetrician/Gynecologist: Advise patients and community members concerning diet, activity, hygiene, and disease prevention. Analyze records, reports, test results, or examination information to diagnose medical condition of patient. Care for and treat women during prenatal, natal and post-natal periods. Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical histories, reports, and examination results. Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.
Monitor patients' condition and progress and re-evaluate treatments as necessary. Perform cesarean sections or other surgical procedures as needed to preserve patients' health and deliver babies safely.
Proper education, residency, and certification are required to enter the vast world of obstetrics and becoming a successful Obstetrician/Gynecologist.
